Purple sulfur bacteria do not produce oxygen during photosynthesis. These are anoxygenic photosynthetic prokaryotes. They use hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) as an electron donor instead of water during the light reactions of photosynthesis. Since they do not use water as an electron source, they do not produce oxygen as a by-product of their photosynthetic process.
