Mitochondria have their own DNA, allowing them to produce some of their own proteins.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a small, circular genome that encodes a limited number of proteins essential for mitochondrial function, as well as some transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). However, most mitochondrial proteins are encoded by nuclear DNA and imported into the mitochondria after being synthesized in the cytoplasm.
