Pneumonia is an infectious disease caused by bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae), viruses (e.g., influenza), or fungi (e.g., Pneumocystis jirovecii).

It leads to inflammation in the alveoli, which fill with fluid or pus, making breathing difficult and reducing oxygen exchange.
