During the G1 phase (Gap 1) of interphase, the cell primarily focuses on growth, synthesizing proteins, and carrying out its normal cellular functions. The cell prepares for DNA replication, which will occur in the subsequent S phase. This phase is also when the cell checks the environment and resources to ensure conditions are favorable for division.
