Eutrophication is the process in which excess nutrients, particularly nitrogen compounds (such as nitrates and ammonium), accumulate in water bodies. These nutrients often come from agricultural runoff, wastewater, and other sources. The excess nitrogen stimulates the growth of algae, leading to algal blooms. As the algae die and decompose, oxygen levels in the water are depleted, which can result in hypoxic conditions or "dead zones," where most aquatic life cannot survive.
