Alleles are the alternative forms of a gene that exist at the same locus (position) on a chromosome.

Each gene can have multiple alleles, which determine variations in traits.

For example, the gene for flower color in pea plants has two alleles: one for purple flowers (P) and one for white flowers (p). An individual inherits one allele from each parent for a given gene, and the combination of these alleles determines the phenotype.
