Mendel’s law states that traits are governed by pairs of alleles, one from each parent.

During meiosis, the two alleles for a given trait separate or segregate.

As a result, each gamete (sperm or egg) contains only one allele for each trait.

For example, a plant with the genotype Tt (T = tall, t = short) will produce gametes, half carrying the T allele and half carrying the t allele.
