The surface area of the cell membrane is where nutrient absorption takes place. A larger surface area allows for more efficient uptake of nutrients from the environment into the cell. This is why smaller cells, with a higher surface area to volume ratio, are generally more efficient at nutrient absorption compared to larger cells.
