Mendel's "unit factors" are now known as genes, which are segments of DNA that code for specific traits.

Each gene exists in different forms called alleles.

For example, the gene for flower color in pea plants can have a dominant allele for purple (P) and a recessive allele for white (p).

The combination of these alleles determines the organism’s phenotype.
