The fluidity of cell membranes is primarily influenced by the presence of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids.

Here’s why:

1.Unsaturated Fatty Acids: These fatty acids contain one or more double bonds, which create "kinks" in their hydrocarbon chains. These kinks prevent the fatty acid chains from packing closely together, thus increasing membrane fluidity. The more unsaturated fatty acids present in the membrane, the more fluid it becomes, as the increased spacing between the phospholipids allows for greater movement.

2.Cholesterol: Cholesterol plays a key role in maintaining the stability and fluidity of cell membranes. At higher temperatures, cholesterol helps to stabilize the membrane by reducing its fluidity, while at lower temperatures, it prevents the membrane from becoming too rigid by preventing tight packing of phospholipids. This balancing act helps the membrane maintain an optimal level of fluidity.
