In the food chain Sun → Tree → Squirrel → Hawk, the squirrel gets its energy directly from trees.

The tree, as a producer, captures energy from the sun through photosynthesis and stores it in the form of carbohydrates. The squirrel, being a herbivore in this case, eats parts of the tree (such as seeds or nuts) and gains energy from the tree.
