A producer is an organism that creates its own food.

Producers, such as plants, algae, and some bacteria, use energy from the sun (through photosynthesis) or from chemicals (through chemosynthesis) to make their own food. This makes them the foundation of food chains, as they provide energy for all other organisms, such as herbivores (primary consumers) and carnivores (secondary consumers).
