For a polynomial function , the possible rational zeros are of the form , where  is a factor of the constant term  and  is a factor of the leading coefficient .

For the function , the leading coefficient is 4 and the constant term is 1.

The factors of 1 are ±1.

The factors of 4 are ±1, ±2, ±4.

So, the possible rational zeros are , where  is a factor of 1 (which are just ±1) and  is a factor of 4.
